L. Nieminen and E. Hyytiä, MAC Protocol for OBS Ring Network With an Overflow Channel, Networking Laboratory, TKK, 2004.
Abstract: Several MAC protocols for optical burst-switched ring networks have been proposed by Xu et al. In this paper we study the performance of these protocols when a few additional assumptions are made. First, we have implemented retransmissions to the MAC protocols and second, the performance of the protocols is simulated also under bursty traffic conditions. Furthermore, the previous work assumes fixed capacity assignment. In this paper we propose an extension, where an overflow channel is used to adaptively overcome high traffic load situations. The performance of the protocols with an overflow channel is studied with different traffic loads and levels of burstiness. The comparisons show that if traffic is bursty, the performance can be signicantly improved by using an overflow channel.
