Abstract: In this paper we analyse the performance of previously proposed MAC protocols for optical ring networks under static traffic conditions. The analytical models are developed for random order and round-robin transmission policies in both slotted and non-slotted cases. The models predict the receiver efficiency, i.e.\ the time each receiver is active. Unlike with the traditional CSMA/CD protocols in these protocols the efficiency $\gamma$ increases as the offered load $\rho$ approaches $1$, and at the limit $\rho=1$ the efficiency $\gamma$ is roughly $0.5$. The models are also verified by numerical simulations and some remarks are made to improve the performance of the MAC protocols.
